Customs officer dies after he is accidentally shot twice in the chest

A customs officer working at a Florida weapons yard has died after being shot twice in the chest during a weapons demonstration.

The unidentified officer, who worked as an instructor at the Trails Glades Shooting Range, was shot in the chest just after 10:30 a.m. and taken to the Rydra Trauma Center in critical condition. He died later this morning.

The officer generally works at the Miami International Airport and was participating in a demonstration with another instructor when he was accidentally shot, Local 10 News reported.

“On the side of the police, it’s mainly customs and border guards, they come on Wednesday to practice,” Dario Pederajo told the outlet.

“Several police officers came running to the civilian side of the firing range, where the main office is, and someone has been shot, stop shooting.”

Police are unable to identify the officer and suggest the shooting was an accident.

“At this time, our thoughts and prayers are with the family of this federal agent,” said a Miami-Dade Police Department spokesman. “It is a very tragic incident, my heart goes out to the family of this officer, he was just doing his job and unfortunately paid the ultimate price.”
