The United Nations has been criticized for decades for its effectiveness, particularly for its means of resolving conflicts and alleviating the suffering of the most vulnerable.

Many argue that the veto power of the permanent members of the Security Council, China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States, creates an unequal balance of power.

Delegates from 46 of the poorest countries have gathered in Doha for the UN’s Fifth Conference of Least Developed Countries.

But must the UN be reformed first, as critics say, to make progress?
