Fresh off his party’s defeat at the federal election, former Prime Minister Scott Morrison had to ensure watching his beloved NRL side Cronulla lose on Saturday – and he had some words to say to a former Shark.

The Sharks went down 32-30 in their extra-time and golden-point qualifying final against the North Queensland Cowboys on Saturday.

That prompted Morrison to take to social media to pen a message to former Sharks hero Chad Townsend who became the villain on Saturday wearing the No.7 for the Cowboys.

The former PM and Member for Cook was named as the Sharks #1 Ticket Holder by the club in 2016.

Townsend played 146 NRL games across two stints with the Sharks and was their halfback in their history-making premiership year in 2016.

However the 31-year-old playmaker fell out of favour with the club last year, having a short stint back at the New Zealand Warriors before signing a lucrative three-year deal with the Cowboys.

Townsend played all 93 minutes of the Cowboys versus Cronulla epic qualifying final on Saturday and led his side well with his kicking game while also laying on a try.

The playmaker is prolific on social media and posted a message to his fans from both clubs after the match.

‘Plenty of emotions last night playing at Shark Park. A place I’ve have had so many great memories at,’ he said.

‘Thank you to the fans on both sides who made the atmosphere electric.

‘Such a physical and tough game and only fitting it went down to the wire with a clutch field goal from [fellow former Shark] Valentine Holmes. Cowboys Country, Let’s Ride.’

His post attracted plenty of interest, but the most noteworthy was from the former Prime Minister himself who congratulated Townsend for his achievements.

‘Chad Townsend you made an extraordinary contribution to our club. Sadly you made a really strong one to your new club last night,’ he posted.

The Cowboys star was quick to reply: ‘Scott Morrison [ScoMo] Appreciate the kind words ScoMo! Hope you and the family are keeping well!’

‘Chad Townsend great days! Glad to see you and family doing well up in Townsville,’ Morrison replied.

The Sharks loving politician also posted on his own Facebook account urging Cronulla on for the rest of the NRL finals.

‘Proud of my Cronulla Sharks and all the great crowd who showed up to support at Shark Park. The silent tribute to the Queen was very respectful and moving,’ he said.

‘It was a truly epic final. Congrats Cowboys, perhaps we’ll meet again in a few weeks time. UPUP.’
