Edward Morrison Warusam: Killer four-metre crocodile that mauled teenage boy to death on Saibai Island as he tried to swim to safety is shot dead
A four-metre crocodile that killed a 16-year-old boy has been shot dead.
The body of Edward Morrison Warusam, who went by his cultural name – Baidham, was found on Thursday in mangroves on Saibai Island, Torres Strait.
Baidham, 16, was traveling in a dinghy with another teenager, 13, on Wednesday evening, but had to abandon the boat when the engine broke down.
The pair attempted to swim 500 meters to shore, but Baidham disappeared into waist-deep water.
His body was found at around 4am the next morning with injuries consistent with a crocodile attack.

Environment Ministry officials ‘humanely euthanized’ four-meter-long crocodile believed to be responsible for attack
Environment Ministry officials launched an air and ground search and discovered the crocodile near where Baidham was killed on Friday evening.
The deadly crocodile was ‘humanely euthanized’ by conservationists on Saturday after receiving the blessing of the Saibai Island community.
“The animal exhibited parading behavior, such as raising its head while swimming, consistent with it being the target animal,” a DES statement said.
“Community members expressed their appreciation for the quick response to the incident.
“The Ministry of Environment, Science and Innovation extends its sincere condolences to the friends, family and community of Saibai Island.”
Baidham’s mother, Kemana Kusu – a single mother of nine living in Cairns, described her teenage son’s death as ‘tragic’.
“Baidham was a very athletic person who participated in all events, whether at school or with his local soccer club, the Edmonton Storms,” she wrote in a GoFundMe post on Saturday.
‘A very humble, kind-hearted young lad. Always smiling and eager to help anyone who crossed his path.
‘A person who was very observant and always looked curious.’
Ms Kusu asked for donations to help her family mourn the sudden death of the 16-year-old.

“In these difficult times, as we all know, one is not prepared for life’s sudden tragedies,” she said.
“I am humbly seeking help to help my children and trying to get through this difficult time.
‘Any contribution is greatly appreciated. My family and I humbly thank you all.”
At the time of publication, the GoFundMe had raised nearly $14,500.
