Critical Role’s Matt Mercer will lead Dimension 20’s Crown of Candy prequel

Critical Role’s Matt Mercer returns to the dome in Dimension 20’s latest series of Dungeons & Dragons, titled The destructive war. The all-star table will feature veteran Dungeon Masters Aabria Iyengar and Brennan Lee-Mulligan as players, along with Lou Wilson (Jimmy KimmelLive!, The King of Staten Island), Zac Oyama (Dimension 20, Not Another D&D Podcast) and Anjali Bhimani (Mrs. Marvel). The first episode will premiere on Dropout on May 10 and beyond YouTube May 17.

It’s not the first time Mercer has crossed paths with the fearless heroes in Dimension 20 and vice versa, but the stakes feel especially high this time around. That’s because the team returns for a prequel to one of the most popular series, A crown of candy. It’s about a world called Calorum whose kingdoms are each based on different food groups. Sure, it sounds childish, but it’s actually one of the more dramatic series the group has performed to date.

The destructive war takes place two decades before the events of A crown of candy. The cast of “delightful villains” was introduced today in a trailer on YouTube (embedded above). They include Bhimani’s Lady Amangeaux, described as “Jessica Rabbit like a mango”, and Iyengar’s Karna, a small young chili pepper. Lee-Mulligan brings out his best older voice work for Bishop Raphaniel Charlock, a shriveled radish, while Wilson’s Delissandro is a teenage warrior (food type unknown). Finally, Zac Oyama plays Colin Provolone, a greasy cheese man.

The series, of course, includes the now de facto custom miniatures and dioramas of the incredible Rick Perry.

While Critical Role continues with new projects, including a science-fantasy audio drama called Middle!fans of cast members Lee-Mulligan, Iyengar and Wilson fall for Worlds Beyond Number’s The wizard, the witch and the savage. It’s a shiny new D&D podcast with loads of custom music and sound effects. You can learn more about the sources of inspiration in our lengthy interview with the cast.
