Australian cricketing legend Mitchell Johnson has questioned David Warner’s selection in the Ashes team, labeling Candice Warner’s defense of him as ‘all a bit weird and cringey’.

Warner found himself at the center of the debate this week, with some fans insisting the 36-year-old Test opener was lucky enough to be named in Australia’s squad.

There have also been suggestions that Warner needs to act early or risk being dropped.

Candice Warner says she’s surprised her husband was chosen, and insists the whole team must perform well.

“If Dave doesn’t perform in that first test, who do they pick better?” she said Tuesday night on Fox Sports’s The Back Page.

Mitchell Johnson believes Warner’s inclusion in the team was not the right thing to do, and says many fans agree with this position.

“We’ve all appreciated Warner’s great career as an opener and what he’s accomplished. But that’s not the point,” Johnson wrote in his column for the Western Australian.

“His form hasn’t been up to scratch for a while.”

Warner even had his wife Candice defend him this week in her panel role on the TV show The Back Page.

“Her loyalty may be admirable, but it was all a bit weird and creepy when she said, ‘If Dave doesn’t perform in that first test, who do they bring in that’s better?'”

“I hate that argument. If players were judged only on their previous performance then Dennis Lillee would still open the bowling for Australia and Ricky Ponting would bat at number 3.’

Johnson then went on to say Test selection seems to be about trying to pick the ‘right players for the circumstances rather than just choosing form’ – which is why Warner’s inclusion is confusing.

Warner ran a horror 2019 Ashes series with an average of just 9.50 – the worst ever by an opener who played 10 innings in a campaign.

Johnson was pleased with the inclusion of all-rounder Mitch Marsh in the team and said it made sense.

Despite not playing Test cricket since the last Ashes Test, Marsh has been in the best form in his career in other forms of the game.
