Darren Lehmann has encouraged the public to be more aware of their health and urged Australians to attend a six-week rehabilitation program.

In 2020, the former Australia Test cricketer and coach underwent triple bypass surgery after suffering a heart attack on his 50th birthday.

Lehmann subsequently quit smoking after previously revealing that he had smoked around 20 cigarettes a day for almost 30 years.

Australia’s former head coach, who stepped down from his role with the international squad in 2018 in the wake of the infamous Sandpapergate ball-tampering scandal, has now credited the medical care and rehabilitation program he has undergone since falling ill for his recovery. .

“I’ve learned more about my body, what it needs to do better, than I have in the last fifty years,” he said 7News.

The six-week course at St Vincent’s Private Hospital Northside in Brisbane focuses on helping patients improve their lifestyle, achieve full exercise and receive tailored medication.

The program is available in hospitals across the country and those who complete the program have “lower mortality, fewer readmissions and are back to work six weeks sooner.”

Lehmann, who made 27 Test appearances for Australia, said of his heart attack: “It was a shock because you think it can’t happen, especially for you at 50.”

But after going through the program, Lehmann has urged others to follow in his footsteps.

Lehmann revealed that his fitness load had increased after his heart attack.

“If you’ve woken up like me, you realize that life isn’t all about wins and losses and the pressure of the game. “Enjoying life means much more,” he said in 2021.
