Australia made a thrilling start to the Cricket World Cup semi-final on Thursday, with it appearing to be the same old story for South Africa.
The Proteas, who have built a reputation as bridesmaids of white-ball cricket, won the toss and opted to bat first in Delhi.
But that decision looked miserable after twelve overs, with the South Africans reduced to 24-4 after exceptional bowling from Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood.
And cricket fans were quick to rub salt in the wounds of the hapless South Africans, taking to X – the social media platform formerly known as Twitter – to mock the Proteas.
“Coming up with a better love story than the South African cricket team choking on ICC knockouts seems like a tough ask,” said one fan.
Another wrote: ‘South Africa and Australia live up to their respective names. SA is suffocating as always while Australia is sailing through.”
“I don’t even think it’s about choking right now,” a third fan claimed. “South Africa is just cursed, with voodoo dools and all.”
