There may be doubts about where Ben Stokes should be placed in the batting order for England, but there can be no doubts about his status as their best outfielder after an incredible athletic display in Canberra.

Stokes defended a total of 178 runs and got into action when Australia’s Mitchell Marsh shot a ball from Sam Curran over the head, with the ball seemingly destined to cross the line.

Stokes, however, had other ideas. As the ball flew over his shoulder, the all-rounder threw out an arm and hooked the ball back into the playing field, preventing a maximum score.

Between wickets with partner Marcus Stoinis, Marsh’s face was a picture of amazement at the stunning acrobatics shown by the England Test captain on Wednesday.

Marsh wasn’t alone in his disbelief, with fans taking to Twitter to praise the 31-year-old’s piece of fieldwork.

“Stokes, you’re a freak,” wrote one fan. Another said: ‘Ben Stokes is unreal. That fielding is mental.’

“Stokes is just ridiculous,” added a third. “Ben Stokes the outfield player is really something else,” said another.

‘That’s absurd of Ben Stokes. Totally ridiculous. (Most) Human bodies don’t work like that,” a fifth added.

Another fan explained how Stokes’ fielding prowess means he is capable of ‘magical’ moments for England.

“Things like this are why I would have Stokes with me. Couldn’t do the whole tournament and then win us a match with a little magic.”
