Cricket commentator interviews couple live at a Big Bash League match – and is left absolutely FLOORED by what happens next

  • Fan proposed to his girlfriend during the Big Bash match at MCG
  • Unfolded on Tuesday when Melbourne Stars played Renegades
  • Commentator Jason Richardson was visibly stunned on live TV

A cricket fan left veteran commentator Jason Richardson stunned on live television on Tuesday night after making a daring move at the MCG.

Channel Seven's identity found a couple in the crowd gathered for rivals Melbourne Stars and the Melbourne Renegades – and after asking a few questions to their favorite Big Bash players, including Glenn Maxwell, the fan seized his moment.

He pulled out an engagement ring and proposed to his partner – and received a nod of approval.

Supporters nearby celebrated as one, with Richardson momentarily at a loss for words.

He eventually composed himself before congratulating the happy couple who witnessed the Stars win the rain-affected derby by eight wickets.

In the long-standing Indian culture, the left hand is considered a form of bad luck, and therefore wedding rings are always worn on the right hand.

In Western culture, the opposite is true, with engagement and wedding rings usually appearing on the left side.

Tuesday night wasn't the first time a couple got engaged at the cricket on the local seaside either.

In 2020, at the SCG during an ODI match, a fan wearing an Indian jersey got down on one knee and asked his girlfriend – dressed in an Australian shirt – to be his wife.

“Here we go,” commentator Adam Gilchrist said during the broadcast at the time.

“Please say yes.”

The woman obliged seconds later, prompting cheers from the crowd and Australian players, including recent ODI World Cup star Maxwell.

'We have confirmation, well done!' Gilchrist said. “It's always a risky game, isn't it?”
