Creature Commandos’ Frank Grillo reveals what’s next for Rick Flag Sr in the DCU: ‘He’s on a mission – and it’s really one-sided’

Creature commands star Frank Grillo has teased the next phase of Rick Flag Sr’s story following the Season 1 finale of the DC Universe (DCU) show.
I speak to Ny Breaking in advance Creature commands In episode 7, titled “A Very Funny Monster,” Grillo reconfirmed that his character will appear in James Gunn’s Superman movie and Peacemaker season 2. We already knew that Flag Sr would have a small role this year Superman film and play a major role in it Peacemaker‘s second season, but it’s nevertheless nice to hear it from the man himself.
What wasn’t entirely clear, however, is the role Flag Sr will play in these DCU Chapter One projects. And while Grillo was reluctant to give anything away about what we can expect from his character in Supermanhe was (surprisingly) more open about Flag Sr’s antagonistic role in Peacemaker‘s second chapter. Potential spoilers follow for Peacemaker season 2!
So, how does Flag Sr fit in? Peacemaker The story of season 2? And why is he portrayed as some sort of tragic villain in one of the next episodes of the best Max shows? Essentially, it comes down to the fact that the titular antihero, played by John Cena, killed his son in 2021. The suicide squad film.
Currently, Flag Sr. is unaware that Christopher Smith/Peacemaker is responsible for the murder of his only child. However, it looks like he’ll find out one way or another, in one of the most anticipated new movies of 2025 (i.e.: Superman) or during Peacemakerseason 2 premiere. According to Grillo, that will lead Flag Sr to embark on a quest of revenge – a quest that, based on Grillo’s slightly spoilery answer, may also give Flag Sr some closure on his son’s murder.
“Rick is on a mission (in Peacemaker season 2),” Grillo told me. ‘It’s really one-sided because it has a lot to do with the death of his son, so he can’t see the so-called bigger picture. I think by the end of that journey (in season 2) he’ll be in a different place where he thinks he got what he needed over the course of the eight episodes.”
Some viewers, who may not have been aware that Grillo’s character would appear in other DCU projects, feared the worst when Flag Sr was left for dead by Batman villain Clayface in Creature commands episode 5. ‘A Very Funny Monster’, however, confirmed that he survived his brush with death. Considering he goes in and out of a coma in the first season finale of the R-rated animated series, it will be interesting to see how quickly he recovers between the final episode of the Max show and his appearance in Superman.
