Creature Commandos episode 3 proves James Gunn won’t be afraid to kill off his DCU darlings – the Max show’s first major death left me emotionally devastated

Well, that didn’t last long. Creature commandsthe first project released as part of the new DC Cinematic Universe (DCU), has already killed off one of its main characters, and I’m not sure I’ll emotionally recover from this devastating moment.
The third episode of the animated Max show, titled ‘Cheers to the Tin Man’ and airing earlier today (December 11), proved that no one will be safe in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s cinematic franchise reset. Full spoilers for Episode 3 follow immediatelyso go check it out before you go any further.
Take a glass of oil, because everyone’s favorite Nazi-killing Android, aka GI Robot, seems to be no more. The character – one of two voiced by Sean Gunn, brother of the DC Studios co-head – was eviscerated by Circe, Creature commands‘ Apparently Big Bad who is also one of the three major ties to Wonder Woman prior to her eventual DCU debut.
Honestly, GI Robot’s death shouldn’t have been such a big shock. First off, the title of episode 3 is an obvious reference to the decades-old automaton, which was originally built to kill German soldiers during World War II. One of the final chapters of the best Max shows also explores GI Robot’s tragic backstory – after the global conflict, he becomes a relic that serves little to no function even in modern society. Okay, that’s not necessarily an indication that he’ll meet his end in episode 3. But now that GI Robot finally gets to kill the Nazis (really, he killed the Sons of Themyscira attacking Pokolistan, but that’s not important) by Rick Flag Sr, and knowing how James Gunn likes to rip our hearts out after finally making a character in one of his projects experienced some form of joy, GI’s death was always on the map.
Is GI Robot Really Dead in Creature Commandos?
That is the big question on everyone’s mind. No one stays dead for too long in comic books and while characters have been permanently eliminated in live-action and/or animated franchises such as the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the DCU’s predecessor, also known as the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), GI Robot is not human. In short: it could be fixed and revived in another DCU Chapter One movie or TV show, or even sooner Creature commands ends.
There is also an earlier form for this event. In DC Comics, there have been no fewer than six versions of GI Robot: Joe, Mac, JAKE 1, JAKE 2, JAKE 6 (don’t ask where versions 3 through 5 are), and Lord Job. As Daft Punk once noted, he can be made “harder, better, faster, stronger.”
So, what are the chances of GI Robot miraculously recovering after his death at Circe’s hands? Whether he’s reborn or not, Sean Gunn isn’t giving anything away. Speaking exclusively to Ny Breaking ahead of the launch of Creature Commandos, the first Guardians of the Galaxy star remained tight-lipped about such a prospect.
“No, I’m not,” he said, smiling, when I asked if he could say if GI would be back. “I don’t mind you asking. I always say (to journalists) that they can ask me anything they want, but I may not be able to answer everything, including that.”
