Three people are in critical condition after a horror crash between a car and a B-double truck on a major highway.

The impact happened before 6am on Thursday on the D-Aguilar Highway near the Nanango Tarong Road intersection, in Nanango, northwest of Brisbane.

The highway is closed in both directions south of Nanango and motorists have been advised to avoid the area.

The B-double car was found along an embankment near the highway when emergency services arrived on the scene.

The cab of the truck, where the driver of the heavy vehicle sits, had overturned near a ditch after the collision.

The multiple trailers towed by the truck managed to stay on the highway.

Dozens of police and emergency vehicles were seen at the intersection and the vehicles had blocked off part of the intersection.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman told Daily Mail Australia three people suffered life-threatening injuries.
