Horrifying moment a falling crane almost crushes a Wigan schoolgirl as she plays with family outside her home then moves to emergency accommodation

This is the shocking moment a huge crane almost crushed a schoolgirl as she played outside her home.

The incident happened at around 10.30am yesterday at a property in Atherton, Wigan, Greater Manchester.

Suddenly, a crane sitting on the back of a truck falls over, crashing into the front of the building and narrowly avoiding the youngster.

Witnesses said the crane ‘severed’ the house and an operation was launched to remove the machine, which was embedded in the building.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident and police are investigating

Photos of the massacre show that part of the roof and front wall were destroyed and at least one room on the top floor of the terraced house was completely destroyed by the crash.

The accident also caused a fire to break out and firefighters worked to isolate gas and electricity to the property and clean up a fuel leak from the road.

The family has been placed in emergency shelter, but they do not know when they will be able to return.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire Rescue Service said: ‘At around 10.30am today (Saturday 6 April), firefighters were called to reports of a crane having fallen through the side of a residential property in Atherton, Wigan.

‘One fire engine from Atherton Fire Station responded quickly to the scene where a truck and crane had overturned on the roadway.

‘Greater Manchester Police set up a cordon on the street while firefighters worked to isolate the gas and electricity to the property and remove spilled fuel from the roadway.

‘The site has now been left to GMP and the crane company to arrange the recovery of the crane.

‘The residents are supported by the municipality in finding temporary housing.’

There is no confirmation yet about the cause of the incident.

However, it comes as Storm Kathleen saw strong winds in parts of the country.

Wind gusts were around 60km per hour in Greater Manchester on Saturday, while areas closer to the coast experienced winds of 110km per hour.

Wigan Council said it is helping residents of the home find temporary accommodation.

Greater Manchester Police said in a statement: ‘Officers are working with the emergency services to investigate and clear an incident involving a crane colliding with a residential building.

‘Fortunately, no injuries were reported and an investigation is underway into how this could have happened.

‘A scene is expected to remain until later today and we ask the public to please avoid the area.

“We would like to thank you for your patience as we respond to this incident.”
