Trey Lance’s time with the 49ers is over, as the Cowboys traded for the quarterback, according to multiple reports.
NFL Network and ESPN said Dallas gave up a fourth-round pick in the deal.
Lance was selected by San Francisco with the No. 3 overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft, but ultimately fell far short of expectations in the Bay.
The North Dakota State player sat behind Jimmy Garoppolo as a rookie and started just two games (six total appearances) before his 2022 season was cut short by injury.
Trey Lance played in just eight games for the 49ers and made only four starts for the team
He started the 2022 season as a starter, but suffered a broken ankle in only the second game
After starting the year as the 49ers’ starter, Lance broke his ankle in Week 2 against the Seahawks and missed the rest of the season.
This year’s preseason was apparently the last straw for the 23-year-old, as he lost the backup quarterback job to Sam Darnold.
Lance now gets a fresh start in Dallas, with Dak Prescott entering his eighth season as the team’s starting quarterback.
Lance is guaranteed $6.745 million over the next two seasons and is expected to serve as a backup to Prescott.
Dallas has an established quarterback in Dak Prescott, who has been injured a lot lately
However, if Prescott’s recent injury history is any indication, Lance could be called upon in Dallas.
Prescott missed five games last season with a broken thumb and sat out 11 games in 2020 after breaking his ankle.
In eight games for the 49ers (four starts), Lance completed 54.9 percent of his passes and threw five touchdowns.
