Cowboys star Tony Pollard “suffered a broken leg in their NFL playoff loss to the 49ers” after falling awkwardly under a tackle by Jimmie Ward… with running back “set to undergo surgery and spend three months away”.

Dallas Cowboys running back Tony Pollard is expected to spend three months out injured after breaking his leg in their playoff loss to the 49ers, according to reports.

San Francisco claimed a 19-12 victory against the Cowboys on Sunday night en route to the Conference Championship after a close battle at Levi’s Stadium.

It was a disappointing night for Dallas, as quarterback Dak Prescott was unable to replicate the same form that ended Tom Brady and the Bucs’ Super Bowl hopes last week, and they are also recovering from a major injury sustained by Pollard.

The latter was ejected with 1:24 of the first half remaining Sunday after going awkwardly under a challenge from 49ers cornerback Jimmie Ward, who left him crawling on the ground in agony after knocking off his hip.

Pollard needed help walking to the touchline before being ruled out of the game and ESPN they report that he suffered a fractured left fibula that night.

The 25-year-old was seen with an Aircast in his left leg as he was taken to the X-ray room at Levi’s Stadium, where it was confirmed that he had broken his leg as a result of Ward’s tackle.

The typical time frame for recovery from such an injury is around three months, which is a major setback for Dallas given that he will become a free agent in March.

Pollard’s injury nightmare comes after the best season of his NFL career, in which he recorded 1,007 yards on 193 carries and scored 12 touchdowns, surpassing his total in his first three seasons.

Before limping out of Sunday’s game against the 49ers, he had six carries for 22 yards and two catches for 11 yards.

In his absence, the Cowboys were forced to rely on Ezekiel Elliott and Malik Davis, with Elliott enjoying 10 carries for 26 yards while Davis failed to produce one.

“That hurt,” Prescott said of Pollard’s injury. ‘Just a guy who brings a lot to our offense, he brings a lot to our team.

Your energy. His energy on the sidelines, in the group, the way he gets the guys going. He is a special teammate, a special player and obviously that hurts. He hurt us.

‘[We] He wasn’t able to create as many explosive plays as we planned, and I’m sure he would have been a big part of some of them if he hadn’t gotten hurt.’
