The Dallas Cowboys created perhaps the most heartwarming moment of the 2023 NFL Draft by retrieving K-State star Deuce Vaughn with the No. 212 overall pick on Saturday.
Vaughn, son of Chris, the Cowboys’ deputy director of scouting, received the life-changing call from none other than his father himself.
“Look man, do you want to come and work for me next week?” said Chris in a cracking voice.
“I wouldn’t mind at all,” Deuce replied, as the Cowboys’ war room erupted in laughter and applause.
“I’ve got someone to talk to you,” Chris added, before handing the phone over to owner and general manager Jerry Jones.

Vaughn Jr. played high school football in Austin — his father, Chris (L), coached for the Longhorns
Jones was emotional as he spoke with Vaughn before detailing the merit of his service for America’s Team.
“You did everything you could to make this call,” he said. ‘I am so delighted. There’s just something magical about this moment.’
Chris deliberately left the room when Cowboys were to discuss Brass Vaughn leading up to the Draft, so keen not to unduly influence the outcome.
“To see him react the way he did,” Deuce Vaughn said of his father hugs Jones and Jones’ son Stephen, the executive vice president of personnel. “I’m not going to lie, it was a tear jerker.”
Chris has been with the Cowboys since 2017 after an 18-year career in college coaching, including with the Texas Longhorns. Deuce attended high school in the Austin area.
“I’ve never seen anything like it in the draft room,” said Jones, who bought the Cowboys in 1989.

Vaughn had 1,643 scrimmage yards from 12 games for the Kansas State Wildcats through 2022
Vaughn said his mom was the first to see it was the Cowboys, and she started crying. Then word quickly spread to everyone else in the room.
“It got pretty loud, I’m not going to lie to you,” he said. “Just a great scene. Family, friends, anyone who had a helping hand to get me here was in that room.’
‘It was a surprise to [Chris] even when we made the decision,” said Stephen Jones. “It was really cool to see the expression on his face.”
Chris Vaughn thanked head coach Mike McCarthy after the choice and promised his son “will not let you down.”
