Courteney Cox is NOT signed on for Scream 7… despite entering talks to return six months ago
Courteney Cox may be ending an impressive 25-year streak… as she has yet to sign on for the seventh Scream film.
The 60-year-old actress has played journalist Gale Weathers since director Wes Craven and writer Kevin Williamson’s first Scream in 1996.
She returned for 1997’s Scream 2, 2000’s Scream 3, 2011’s Scream 4, 2022’s Scream and 2023’s Scream VI. She is the only actor, other than Roger L. Jackson, to voice the iconic Ghostface killer, who appears in every Scream film.
While there were reports in March that Cox was in talks to return, following the return of Neve Campbell who missed Scream VI, she told Variety She is not yet on board on Monday.
“I’m not officially signed yet. I’m not, but there’s going to be a Scream 7,” Cox said Saturday at the Rock4EB charity event.

The actress added that she is “thrilled” that original Scream writer Kevin Williamson will direct the seventh Scream film, marking his first time helming the horror franchise.
“You can’t do better than that choice. It’s going to be fun,” Cox said of Williamson directing this new installment of the beloved horror franchise.
She added that no timeline has been set yet for a decision on whether or not she will return to the franchise.
“They’re rewriting all the time. It’s not like I don’t know what’s going on,” Cox insisted, adding that she hopes they bring back her ex David Arquette.
Cox and Arquette married in 1999 and welcomed daughter Coco, 20, in 2004, and starred in the first five films before his Dewey Riley was killed off in 2022’s Scream.
“I get the reasons why they did it, but whoa! Talk about a missed character,” Cox said.
“Dewey is so beloved by Scream fans. They need to figure it out,” Cox added, though it’s unclear whether there are any plans to bring him back or not.
Since Neve Campbell’s return was announced in March, there have been no official casting announcements.

Melissa Barrera, star of Scream (2022) and Scream VI, was fired from the project last year after posting about Israel on social media.
Jenna Ortega also pulled out of the project shortly after due to conflicts with her Netflix series Wednesday.
Cox recently starred in the Starz original series Shining Vale, which he also produced alongside Greg Kinnear and Mira Sorvino.
She also signed on to play Brittany Wagner in the Spectrum Originals series Last Chance U, based on the Netflix documentary series of the same name. However, there have been no updates on that project for some time.
