Kyle, 34, made an offer on the property earlier this year, knowing there was a shed-like structure in the backyard.
But when they got there, the damp room reminded them of something much more sinister in the garden.
He referenced the 2022 horror film Barbarian, which features a nightmarish bomb shelter.
“The first thing I thought of was that movie Barbarian, or that scene in Silence of the Lambs where Jodie Foster is in Buffalo Bill’s basement, and you see the rotting corpse in the bathtub. I didn’t go down there that day, as you can imagine,” he said.

Kyle, 34, put an offer on the property earlier this year knowing there was some sort of hideaway in the back garden. However, when they arrived, the damp space reminded them of something more sinister in the garden
Kyle even joked in a Reddit message that ‘it will definitely be nicknamed The Sex Dungeon.’
He told Newsweek that the hiding place was actually the only downside to what they considered a wonderful opportunity.
“My wife had a job at a nearby university, so I went over to meet with a realtor and look at a few houses,” he said.
“The house was in great shape. It was the best I had seen all weekend, but there was one catch: it had a creepy bomb shelter in it.”
As they retired to the shelter, they called the house they purchased their “dream home.”
It took Kyle a while to even dare to go outside, out of concern about ‘the state it would be in’.
“I was pretty sure it was going to be super humid and dirty down there. I mentally prepared myself for the worst – maybe a few inches of cloudy water on the floor or a dirty old mattress,” he added.

‘Luckily it was only a little creepy, and there were no poisonous insects or snakes down there.’
Kyle is no longer afraid of the underground shelter and now wants to turn it into a place for his art.
“I definitely want to make it feel less like an underground concrete box. I made my decision when I saw the space because I’ve always dreamed of a music room,” he said.
He plans to move his drum kit and amplifiers inside so he can take full advantage of the room’s soundproofing.
The original post on Reddit has since received a storm of reaction, with over 31,000 people shocked by his discovery.
While many were baffled, some of them had ideas for remodeling a room similar to what Kyle is planning, such as a man cave or a den.
Ultimately, he is happy with the responses and even received some useful tips for his new music room.
“I’m glad I posted about it because some Redditors pointed out the dangers of toxic fumes that I hadn’t considered, and others pointed out structural concerns. It prompted me to contact an inspector and have the walls and ceiling examined,” he said.
