Countries with the tallest women revealed… and neither Britain nor the US are in the top 20

Latvia is home to the tallest women in the world, figures show.

Females born in 1996 in the Baltic state average 169.80cm – or about 5ft 7in.

British women, for comparison, measure 164.4cm, about 5ft 5in.

This puts Great Britain in 38th place in the international ranking.

The US ranks 42nd, with women averaging 5 feet 8 inches (163.54 cm) in height.

But height cannot be used as a direct measure of well-being. Researchers believe that genetic factors largely determine an individual’s height.

Their results showed that, as with men, the tallest women in the world are European.

The top five is rounded off by the Netherlands (168.72 cm), Estonia (168.67 cm), the Czech Republic (168.46 cm) and Serbia (167.69 cm).

At the other end of the scale, Guatemala is home to the smallest women in the world – 149.39cm (4ft 11in) on average.

It was followed by the Philippines (149.61 cm), Bangladesh (150.79 cm), Nepal (150.86 cm), and East Timor (151.15 cm).

According to Guinness World Records, that is the tallest woman in the world Rumeysa Gelgifrom Turkey, which stands at a towering 215.16cm (7ft 0.7in).

The shortest woman in the world Jyoti Amgefrom Nagpur, India, 62.8 cm long.
