Gareth Southgate did not rule out the possibility of England opting for Mason Greenwood in the future, as he bizarrely appeared to leave the door open for the discarded Manchester United star on Thursday.

Manchester United confirmed Greenwood would never play for the club again after completing a six-month internal investigation into his dropped criminal charges earlier this month.

Greenwood, who was arrested in January 2022 and charged with attempted rape, assault and control and coercion, is now planning his future outside Old Trafford in a way that will most likely take him abroad.

When asked about the 21-year-old’s future with England, Southgate insisted the matter is ‘very complex’, and could not rule out his potential return in the future.

“Obviously it’s a very complex matter,” he said after announcing his selection for the September internationals on Thursday.

“He’s not playing, so that’s not a consideration for us. It’s hypothetical. Whatever I say will frankly be used in a less nuanced way.”

Manchester United faced extreme reactions after it was revealed that Richard Arnold, CEO of the Red Devils, who led the internal investigation, initially planned to integrate Greenwood back into Erik ten Hag’s squad in early August.

Following news of his possible re-integration, Countdown co-host and long-standing Manchester United fan Rachel Riley insisted she would stop supporting the club if they welcomed him back into contention.

Meanwhile, a group of United supporters protested before the first home game of the season against Wolves at Old Trafford, outlining their opposition to the 21-year-old striker being reintegrated into the first team.
