Costco is now offering Ozempic prescriptions to members through a $179 weight loss plan

It is perhaps best known for its inflation-busting $1.50 hot dog and soda combo meal.

But Costco fans may soon find that they no longer crave fast food, as the wholesaler has announced that it now offers prescriptions for weight loss medications like Ozempic.

The move is part of Costco’s new $179 three-month weight loss program in partnership with healthcare provider Sesame. Non-members can also register for €195.

But the cost of the drug is at the top. According to Sesame’s website, GLP-1 weight loss medications can set users back between $950 and $1,600 per month.

The company says it can prescribe injectable semaglutides – including Ozempic and Wegovy – as well as oral weight loss medications. It is claimed that patients can lose 5 percent of their body fat in three months, ten percent in six months and 15 percent in a year.

Costco and Sesame first announced their partnership last fall when it began offering online health checks for just $29.

But bosses noted that one in five customer queries were related to weight loss support.

Sesame co-founder and president Michael Botta shared CNN: “It wasn’t what we initially thought would make sense to offer to Costco members coming to Sesame.

“But we realized pretty quickly, just by looking at what people were curious about, that there was a clear unmet need here.”

The three-month renewable program launched Tuesday and includes a video consultation with a doctor or weight loss specialist, ongoing support and unlimited messaging and potentially a GLP-1 prescription if needed.

Weight loss drugs have swept the country in recent years, gaining a legion of celebrity fans including Oprah and Elon Musk.

Botta added: “There is increasing interest among the affluent, among the middle class and among almost everyone.

“Obesity occurs across all socioeconomic statuses in America. There are a lot of people who have this interest and this need and we saw that in the data.”

U.S. healthcare providers wrote more than nine million prescriptions for Wegovy and other injectable weight loss medications in the last three months of 2022 alone.

Researchers at JPMorgan estimate that by 2030, about 9 percent of the U.S. population – or 30 million people – could be using GLP-1 drugs.

Costco has 130 million members, according to its website. For an executive membership you pay $120 per year, while the Business and Gold Star membership both cost $60 respectively.

In March, Costco missed expectations for second-quarter sales due to lower gasoline prices and weak consumer discretionary spending.

Big-box retailers like Amazon and Walmart are offering healthcare services after the pandemic.

Amazon offers virtual primary care to Prime members through One Medical, which it acquired in 2022.

Walmart operates primary care centers in its stores, and its membership warehouse club chain, Sam’s Club, sells GLP-1 medications through its pharmacies.
