Costco and Aldi reveal New Year’s Day closures but many stores will be open: Find out where you can shop here
As New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day approach this week, many are getting ready to ring in 2025 with new outfits, accessories and last-minute essentials.
Luckily for shoppers, most major stores are open to help you get ready for the party, although hours may vary.
Whether you’re looking for a gorgeous new shirt, a stylish pair of shoes or cozy pajamas for New Year’s Eve, there are plenty of shops open.
Many retail locations have adjusted hours on both December 31 and January 1, but most chains make it easy for customers to shop for the festivities.
While there are plenty of options for grocery shopping this week, be sure to check individual store hours before heading out as many locations may have special holiday schedules.
Here’s what you need to know about retailers and whether or not they’ll be open on Tuesday, December 31 and Wednesday, January 1, 2025.

Costco
The wholesale giant will close its U.S. locations for the day on Jan. 1 so employees can spend time with family.
However, Costco will be open for regular hours on New Year’s Eve (December 31) so members can purchase last-minute items before the end of the year.
Aldi
The discount supermarket chain will also be closed on New Year’s Day and will reopen on January 2, but will remain open until 7pm on New Year’s Eve.
Aldi fans will have to plan ahead for their Specialbuy purchases.

Walmart
All Walmart stores will be open regular hours on December 31 and January 1.
Goal
Target closes at 9:00 PM local time on New Year’s Eve, but will be open normal hours on New Year’s Day.
Trader Joe’s
Trader Joe’s will open December 31 during its usual Sunday hours of 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., but all 597 locations will remain closed on New Year’s Day.
Kroger
According to the website, most Kroger locations will maintain regular hours on both days, giving shoppers access to everything from fresh produce to party favors.
Sam’s club
In line with Costco, Sam’s Club will close on January 1.
Expect shorter opening hours on New Year’s Eve, with many locations closing as early as 6pm.
Kohl’s
On December 31, Kohl’s stores will open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on January 1 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
TJ Maxx, Marshall’s and HomeGoods
All three stores are open on New Year’s Eve from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM and on New Year’s Day from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM.

JCPenney
JCPenney stores will open at 11 a.m. and closing times will vary by location on December 31.
JCPenney said its stores will be open on New Year’s Day from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. local time.
Northstream
On December 31, Nordstrom will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and regular hours will resume on New Year’s Day.
Home Depot, Lowe’s and Ace Hardware
Both hardware stores, Home Depot and Lowe’s, open December 31 but close early at 6 p.m.
Ace Hardware stores are independently owned and operated, so hours vary by location. Customers are encouraged to contact their local store for specific holiday hours.
On January 1, Home Depot will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., while Lowe’s will have different hours depending on location. Ace Hardware is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

REI
Open December 31st from 10am to 6pm, REI is open from 11am to 5pm. on January 1.
Ikea
Ikea stores will be open from 10am to 6pm on New Year’s Eve, the company confirmed.
IKEA stores are open on New Year’s Day, but with adjusted opening hours.
Big Lot
Open December 31 from 9am to 9pm. Big Lots is also available for you in January during regular opening hours.
Macy’s
Macy’s is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, while most Macy’s have regular store hours on New Year’s Day.

Burlington
Burlington stores will open on December 31 and are expected to close at 10pm local time.
Shops are open on New Year’s Day, but opening hours may vary. Please contact your local store for more information about opening hours.
Call
Belk will be open from 10am to 7pm on New Year’s Eve, the company confirmed, while opening hours will vary on New Year’s Day. Shoppers are encouraged to use the store locator tool to find out if their local store is open on January 1st.
Sephora
Each Sephora location will have different hours depending on their region and/or mall-mandated hours, the company confirmed.
Customers can use the company’s store finder to find specific store hours.
Bass Pro Shop and Cabela’s
On December 31 and New Year’s Day, both stores are open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Staples, Office Depot and OfficeMax
Staples stores are open but are expected to close at 6 p.m. local time on Dec. 31, the company told USA TODAY.
Stores close at the standard closing time if the store in question normally closes earlier than 6 p.m.
Office Depot and OfficeMax stores will also be open, with stores closing at 6 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, the company said.
PetSmart and PetCo
PetSmart stores will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on December 31, while PetCo stores will be open during regular hours and close at 7 p.m. local time.
Supplier of tractors
Tractor Supply Co. stores. are open on New Year’s Eve from 8am to 6pm and on New Year’s Day from 9am to 6pm.
