And now the American actor who played him, Todd Boice, 62, has revealed his new job after leaving the soap, saying: ‘I’m dead excited!’

Todd said Birmingham Mail: ‘In the last week of November I start rehearsals for the panto, which lasts for the last three weeks of December.

“And then Bill Kenwright, who was a famous actor in ‘Corrie’ before he became a big stage producer, just offered me – without even blinking – the role of Laurence Olivier in Sleuth.

“It’s going to be a tour that starts in Windsor and goes on a tour of London and then comes to The Lowry here (in Salford). That will take me until the end of June, so I’m really excited about that.’

In his final Coronation Street scenes, the shock twist saw Todd’s character Stephen mowed down by Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoigne) as he raced to the Rovers after hearing the killer was back in town and holding Jenny Connor (Sally Ann Matthews) hostage .

But the surprises weren’t over for fans of the show, when it was revealed in the final few moments that his latest victim, Tim Metcalf (Joe Duttine), was still alive.

During the episode, residents were left reeling after Stephen’s murderous activities were exposed, but he was nowhere to be found.

While trying to board a flight to Bangkok, he realized his passport was missing and was forced to return to Weatherfield to confront partner Jenny.

Meanwhile, Jenny heard noises coming from the Rovers Return house and took it upon herself to investigate.

Rita Sullivan (Barbara Knox) urged Jenny not to go inside, saying: ‘Jenny this is not your responsibility, this is a job for the police!’

Two ladies were almost knocked off their feet when Dylan Wilson stormed out of the pub with his friend.

Elsewhere, Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien) also noticed something in the pub and went into the Rovers boards to investigate.

After talking to Jenny, who explained that she had caught Dylan smashing glasses in the pub, Sarah revealed that she had entered after seeing someone upstairs.

‘Did you see me up there? “I’ve never been up there,” replied Jenny.

‘I think we should go!’ Sara exclaimed after realizing they weren’t alone.

Before the duo had a chance to escape, Steven ran down the stairs and hit his niece Sarah over the head with a wine bottle.

“No, you made me do this, it was you! She’s breathing, she’ll be fine. This was your fault! You’ve both been sneaking around,” Steven yelled at Jenny.

Meanwhile, a worried Gail sent a message to a group chat in Weatherfield where she got a reply from ‘Jenni’ that Sarah was with her at the station.

Back at the Rovers, Stephen is seen texting Gail from Jenny’s phone as he questions her about the whereabouts of his passport.

Jenny began to piece it all together when she realized that Teddy’s body must have been hidden in the roof box, not the sewing machines as previously believed.

Stephen admitted he committed the crimes out of “fear of failure” saying it was his last chance to be successful and not “washed up and pathetic”.

Jenny tells Stephen that his passport is in her purse and that he should run before Audrey finds out who he really is in an attempt to break free.

As he confessed his love for Jenny, voices could be heard outside the pub, but Stephen put his hand to muffle Jenny’s screams for help.

After hearing the screams, Sean Tully rushed to help, informing the police that he believed Stephen was in the Rovers.

After waking up, Sarah hit Steven over the head with a chair, leading to a fight in which the serial killer took Jenny hostage.

Stephen then led Jenny out of the pub, holding a broken bottle to her throat, in front of the Platt family who had gathered on the pavement outside.

Meanwhile at Roy’s Cafe, Carla receives a phone call from Peter Barlow and as the duo put two and two together, Carla runs into the Rovers as a taxi driver races to the scene.
