Speaking: Coronation Street star Antony Cotton has hinted that Sean Tully will have a hard time changing his suspicions about his boyfriend Laurence after he is accused of killing his wife
In the next few scenes, Todd and Eileen come across a taxi driver, who claims that he had an affair with Laurence while he was married to his wife Lindsay.
He then claims that when Lindsay found out about the affair, Laurence killed her by pushing her off a mountain, and Todd immediately rushes to Sean with the news.
Speaking about the scenes, Antony explained: “From a dramatic standpoint, this is a classic boy who cried wolf story that Todd has said everything out loud about Laurence that he could possibly say, but there will always be a moment when something could be true
Interview: In the next few scenes, the bartender is heading for a mini-break on a remote mountain with his new man, but becomes noticeably nervous after Eileen discovers his sinister past.
Bombshell: Eileen and Todd discover that Laurence may have killed his wife Lindsay after she discovers their affair
“But of course, Todd, being the way he is, regardless of whether things are true or not, it’s always about what the motive is. Todd always seems to have a reason for everything he does.
‘Sean doesn’t have a motive at all. He messes up and can be deeply irritating at times, but never out of malice.
“So when Todd is presented with the fact that he finds out about Laurence, it’s the same as the picture of the wife on the phone, etc., even when it seems to be coming from a good place, Sean can’t help but feel that Todd it’s just a bit of a nasty job and he’s doing it on purpose.
“Even when it’s a protective place over Sean and it’s something that needs to be told to Sean very quickly, it also makes Todd excited to have this news to tell.”
Dramatic! Antony hinted that despite defending Laurence to his nosy brother Todd, Sean immediately begins to ‘catastrophize’ the situation.
Despite this, Antony added that Sean cannot shake his suspicions about Laurence, despite his fiery and turbulent relationship with Todd.
He said: “Ultimately it’s probably because they’re like grieving brothers and they’re used to that way of being, but when Sean is alone he starts thinking about what Todd has said about how Laurence’s wife died and Sean has been so unlucky in love that he’s used to that feeling and that default mode that it’s really quick and easy for him to go back to that place and think the worst of Laurence.
“As soon as Todd puts a flea in his ear, about what he knows about Laurence, Sean reacts badly and tells him he’s a spiteful evil liar, but by the time he has two minutes to himself, he starts to think he knows which is probably true.’
Drama! Sean has been reluctant to listen to Todd’s suspicions about Laurence after he tried to kiss him in December.
Antony went on to reveal that given Sean’s dramatic nature, it’s no surprise that he still assumes the worst when he addresses Laurence on his journey.
He said: ‘Yes, it does and I can relate to that because one trait that Sean and I share is being a catastrophist, so it’s very easy for me to play that with Sean.
“Sometimes in real life I start to worry about things that could happen and the people around me just look at me like I’m mad that my brain went to that place.
‘If someone I know is having tests in the hospital for something minor, I’ll go to the worst case scenario in my brain. So I can totally understand why Sean is thinking the worst of this situation.
Worried: And despite brushing off Todd and Eileen’s claims, Sean is noticeably flustered when Laurence reveals that their mini-break will involve mountains.
Since he first hit the cobblestones, Sean has never managed to find the perfect man, but Antony went on to say that he hopes one day he can find the man of his dreams.
He said: “It would certainly be great to see a big gay street wedding and yes, it would be a lovely story for Sean with mishaps along the way, cancellations of things and people not showing up, but a beautiful happy day.” in the end.
“But there’s also a flip side, once you settle in, that’s when people can stop writing stories for the character. I guess it depends on what the story is, but I would definitely like there to be a wedding sometime in the future that involves Sean.
Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
