Coronation Street star’s long-term future on ITV soap is revealed

The long-term future of the Major Coronation Street star in ITV soap is revealed as the popular actor insists the show is his ‘first priority’

The unpredictable savannas of rural South Africa are a world away from the relatively car-free cobbled streets of Coronation Street.

And Andy Whyment admits he’s glad to be back in Weatherfield after being eliminated from the pre-recorded all star version of I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here!

The actor traveled to South Africa’s Kruger National Park last October to film the spin-off, but endured a miserable seven-day stint in camp before leaving Monday night with former Made In Chelsea star Georgia Toffolo.

Whyment, 42, has since outlined his long-term career plans and admits he has no intention of giving up his role as affable Corrie regular Kirk Sutherland any time soon.

The actor, who first appeared in the ITV1 soap in 2000, told The sun: ‘I’ve seen a lot of people come and go, thinking they’re going to bigger and better things, but Corrie to me is my number one, always has been and always will be.

“I grew up watching it as a kid and when I drive up to those barriers in the morning and they lift them I think, ‘I’m still working on Coronation Street.'”

He added: ‘If I had told myself when I was growing up I would be 23 years old, it’s amazing and it hits wood for many years to come.

“I have a great work-life balance, I go in, do my job and I love the banter we have on set and may it continue for a long time to come.”

Whyment and fellow campmate Toffolo were eliminated on Monday night after failing their final challenge, but viewers were unimpressed by their departure.

On Twitter, one wrote, “WHY YOU ANDY AND TOFF!”, while another said, “I’m sorry but why do the best go home first Shaun and now Toff.”

Another added, “Toff and Andy aren’t going,” while a fourth added, “I don’t really want to look any further. Toff was my favourite.”

While a fifth commented, “toff carried the show, can’t wait for absolutely dead content now.”

Viewers kicked off Friday night as the show ended with a dramatic cliffhanger leading up to the double elimination.

Fans were far from impressed with the “cruel” turn as they took to Twitter to vent their anger, with one even asking, “What are you playing on?!”
