A shocking Coronation Street plot will see troubled teenager Mason Radcliffe fighting for his life next week after being the victim of a horrific stabbing.

The violent attack, which airs on ITV on Monday, will leave Mason (Luca Toolan) in a critical condition after his low-life siblings Matty (Harry Lowbridge) and Logan (Seamus McGoff) viciously attack him with a zombie knife.

Trying to get his life back on track after his prison sentence, Mason offers to help DS Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers) frame the villainous couple as she digs deeper into their involvement in the death of her late wife Becky.

But he pays a high price when Logan and Matty turn on him after he robs their apartment and discovers a World War II helmet that could place them at the scene of Becky’s death.

The gripping plot comes as data shows England and Wales have seen an 80% increase in knife crime over the past decade.

Statistics for the 12 months to June 2024 show that there were 50,973 police-recorded offenses involving a knife or sharp object.

The research also found that in the same period there were 225 murders involving a knife or sharp instrument in England and Wales, with 78 of the victims under the age of 25 and 10 under the age of 16.

Coronation Street boss Kate Brooks said: ‘It’s vital to raise awareness of this issue and really show the impact knife crime has, not just on the victim and their loved ones, but also on the wider community.’

“Given the alarming statistics, we want to do everything we can to combat this violent endemic disease.”

“If anyone, after seeing this harrowing but important story, thinks twice about bringing a knife to a fight, we have achieved our goal of raising awareness.”

To ensure the accuracy and sensitivity of the storyline, Coronation Street bosses have also worked closely with The Ben Kinsella Trust.

The knife crime prevention charity was founded in 2008 following the murder of 16-year-old Ben Kinsella.

Patrick Green, CEO of The Ben Kinsella Trust, said: ‘This powerful Coronation Street storyline vividly highlights the devastating impact of knife crime.’

“We applaud the show for its commitment to working closely with us to accurately portray this reality.”

‘This storyline aims to raise public awareness of the dangers of knife crime.’

‘Additionally, we hope it will encourage viewers to seek help and support before situations escalate, which will ultimately help prevent knife violence.’

Luca, who has been on the cobbles since September 2023, also said he was ‘honoured’ to be part of the storyline.

He said, “I am truly honored to be a part of this storyline. As a viewer I have always enjoyed Coronation Street, but I completely underestimated the power it has on the audience until I became involved with the bullying storyline.”

“Fingers crossed that this storyline will be received as we hope and in the end, if one person drops a knife and someone is saved, that would certainly make it all worthwhile.”

Coronation Street airs on ITV1 and ITVX.
