A mother is left ‘devastated’ after desperately trying to get her four children from a burning barn but only managing to save two.

Jasmine Beck, 26, ran into the shed of her family’s home on Officer Court in Corio, southwest of Melbourne, on Sunday morning and frantically tried to pull them out from behind a burning couch.

She managed to grab six-year-old Mavis and five-year-old Isaac, but couldn’t reach three-year-old Saige and 18-month-old Ashlynn. Their bodies were recovered from the wreckage later on Sunday.

The two older siblings were taken to Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital in a critical condition, accompanied by their father Kane McGregor. They fight for life.

The children’s aunt, Sarah Guardiano, said Ms Beck “did her very best” to get them out of the shed as quickly as possible.

“Getting all those babies out, as you can imagine, you know, having to call the fire department, put out a fire, get your kids out,” she said The age newspaper outside the property on Mondays.

“She did her best to get them all out as quickly as possible.”

Ms Guardiano’s partner Anthony McGregor said Ms Beck is distraught. “She’s destroyed. She doesn’t regulate herself. “She’s trying to be the best mother she can be right now and be there to support her children who are suffering,” he said.

Neighbors told the publication that the siblings were usually seen riding bicycles through the cul-de-sac.

Police Inspector Emma Bartel said on Sunday that neighbors tried to rescue the children before emergency services arrived.

Officers spoke to Ms Beck but Inspector Bartel said she was unable to provide further details.

An investigation has been launched into the cause of the fire, but it is not considered suspicious.

A family friend launched one GoFundMe page to help support the family.

“This family will never be the same without these children in their lives,” the fundraiser read.

“I hope to help this family alleviate the financial costs of putting these beautiful babies to rest, as this is such an unimaginable situation for any parent to experience.”

On Sunday evening, a loved one wrote a tribute to Saige and Ashlynn on Facebook.

“I hate life sometimes,” he wrote.

‘The lives of two little ones were tragically ended today. May you both Rip Saige and Ashlynn lie in the arms of God, resting.”

“Two are in hospital in an operating room fighting for their little lives so can everyone please send these little warriors a prayer and wish them well and if there is a god please help them.”

Inspector Bartel said investigators ‘owed’ it to the family to discover what caused the fire.

“This is unfortunately the worst-case scenario of what we can expect in an incident like this,” she said.

“We talked to a family and we talked to neighbors. We are trying to piece together the events of what took place.”

“We can only do our best to support the family and do our best to give them answers.”

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
