Corach Rambler wins the Grand National at Aintree to hand trainer Lucinda Russell her second victory in the iconic race after protesters took to the track and had to postpone the race

  • Corach Rambler won the Randox Grand National on Saturday
  • Rambler attacked Vanillier and Gaillard Du Mesnil to claim victory
  • It was the second horse Lucinda Russell has trained to win the event

Corach Rambler gave trainer Lucinda Russell a second win in the Randox Grand National at Aintree.

Russell’s offense, previously successful with One For Arthur, jumped last for Derek Fox and came home for Vanillier.

Gaillard Du Mesnil was third, in a race delayed by about 15 minutes after Animal Rising protesters took to the track.

Rambler was the 8/1 favorite heading into the event and proved why after Saturday afternoon’s stormy victory.

Afterwards, Fox told ITV Racing: ‘He’s just a phenomenal horse. I can not believe it. Normally he raises his head a little bit, but today he traveled everywhere. He is the smartest horse. He’s so smart.’

The race was postponed after animal rights protesters invaded the course and tried to cling to jumps.

Activists from Animal Rising, an environmental and animal rights group, tried to climb fences and break on the grass before the race.

Russell, trainer of Grand National winner Corach Rambler, accused activists who delayed the race by breaking into the course of “endangering the welfare of the horses.”

Russell said of the disruption, “It’s a real pain in the neck. Are the demonstrators doing it for themselves or for the horses?

“If they’re doing it for the horses, they need to understand that they’re putting their well-being on the line right now.

“We can take them back, keep them safe and cool, but really it all seems a bit pointless.”

Former jockey Peter Scudamore, who is part of the Corach Rambler team, added to ITV Racing: ‘I’m sorry for the horses.

“While the demonstrators are doing this, it is affecting the well-being of the horses. I wish people would see the care the stable staff give to these horses.’
