Police launch investigation after reports of ‘shots fired’ at North Carolina Community College as terrified students hide under desks

Police are responding to reports of gunshots at a community college in North Carolina.

Officers confirmed that there were reports of gunshots at Forsyth Tech, but there is no active shooter on the scene.

Shots were reportedly fired at the Strickland Center and the students were escorted to a safe area.

It has not currently been confirmed if there have been any injuries, but those inside the building remain locked up.

In a statement, the Winston-Salem Police Department said: “At 10:10 am, WSPD received a report of a shooting on the main campus of Forsyth Tech Community College.

‘Our officers are on the scene and assisting. Information will be provided as it becomes available.

‘We can confirm that there is no active shooter on the Forsyth Tech campus. There is still an active investigation on campus.

‘There are no other threats to any other schools in the area. Anyone with information about this event is asked to call 911 or the WSPD non-emergency 336-773-7700.

Police have closed several streets surrounding the campus as a precaution.

An alert was sent out to the students saying there had been shots fired, and other schools were also forced to go into hiding.

Forsyth Tech officials said two suspects are armed and on the run, described as men wearing gray and black hoodies.

The Stokes County Schools superintendent confirmed that there were Stokes County students on campus at the time.

In a statement they said: “While I do not have full details, I can confirm that there were Stokes County Schools students on the Forsyth Tech campus at the time of the shooting.” All students have been accounted for and are safe.

‘We do not anticipate there being a threat to any of our schools in Stokes County at this time; however, we have been in contact with local police and will be providing additional security for our school this afternoon.’

A Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools spokesperson added: Students attending events at Forsyth Tech are with their school representatives. All WS/FCS students are counted.
