Police and soldiers discovered the cold rooms after storming a cartel-controlled home during a shootout with gang members in the early hours of Sunday.

Inside, they found 14 butchered torsos, and a search of a second property revealed another freezer room containing the remains of at least 20 victims in cold storage.

Some media reports say some prisoners – possibly awaiting execution – have been released alive by Mexican authorities.

That is understood Police had been chasing a suspect who was hiding in the building where three kidnap victims were being held, officials told AFP on condition of anonymity.

Police then conducted operations in the area and found more remains in other locations, they said, seizing a vehicle, weapons and unspecified drugs.

Veracruz is one of Mexico’s most violent regions due to battles between rival gangs for control of lucrative drug trafficking routes into the United States.

The Latin American country has recorded more than 400,000 murders since launching a controversial military anti-drug offensive in 2006.

It has also recorded more than 110,000 disappearances since 1962, most of them attributed to criminal organizations.
