- Matty Johns tells Kyle Sandilands not to ‘let his son fuck’
- Cooper confirms shock move with humorous explanation
Matty Johns has sent Kyle Sandilands a warning after his son Cooper announced his retirement from the NRL to pursue a career in radio with KIIS FM as part of The Kyle and Jackie O Show.
Cooper, 24, was not re-signed by the Manly Sea Eagles at the end of the 2023 season and has decided to put his football boots aside for the time being.
When The Kyle and Jackie O Show came back on the air Monday, Jackie asked Kyle why Cooper had his own desk in their studio.
“We’re not sure what he’s doing yet, but we’ve just secured his services,” Sandilands replied.
“The reason we got Coops is because I thought he was really, really good. We were paranoid and thought ‘we have to get this man to safety’.”

Cooper’s father Matty Johns called Kyle Sandilands to warn him not to let his son ‘get screwed’
Sandilands then revealed the conversation he had with Cooper’s ex-NRL star dad Matty.
“His dad was on the phone saying, ‘Don’t let my son get screwed. Do you really want him to quit playing football? It’s got to be worth it,'” Kyle said.
Cooper took to social media on Monday to confirm the news that he is quitting football for a radio job.
In a humorous Instagram post, Cooper took a shot at his former coach Craig Bellamy and his father.
“I’ve enjoyed my time in the @nrl, but after a few late nights thinking about some Malibu schooners and Coke no sugar, I’ve decided to take a break and swap the leather pigskin for a microphone,” wrote Johns.
“Never in my days did I expect such an outpouring of sadness, grief and emotion.
“But in all seriousness, I will never forget the lifelong friends I made and the ones I hope to never see again (@bradparker04 @harrrygrantt & @tyranwishart) to name a few.
“The memories… so many to choose from… first game… first try… first scandal of the offseason, shoutout to @munster94 @hecticcheese.
Sandilands revealed he doesn’t know exactly what Cooper will do at the radio station
Cooper confirmed the shocking move on radio on Monday with a humorous post on social media
‘And finally to all my coaches, especially Craig Bellamy… who refused to select me despite mediocre form and countless bribes: don’t expect a reference if you’re looking for another club to drag through the mud.
‘And finally to my family, who only causes me stress… let me fuck. Is this the end, who knows… one thing I do know is that rugby league is the greatest game of all.’
