McNamara pleaded guilty to wounding/gross bodily harm to a person with intent to murder after appearing in court this week.
A convicted murderer tried to decapitate an inmate with knives made from razor blades after overhearing him bragging about his sexual crimes with children, a court has heard.
The court heard that McNamara used blades fashioned from razors, paddle pop sticks and duct tape to attack McCurley in the prison yard. the daily telegraph informed.
The court heard that McCurley was on remand for child sex offences, and that McNamara had heard him bragging about them before approaching him from behind.
He then strangled him and pushed him to the ground before slashing the inmate’s throat with two knives, dropping the weapons, and walking away.
McCurley grabbed his throat and called for help before being transported to St Vincent’s Hospital in serious condition.
Surgeons performed exploratory surgery for the 20 cm long laceration.
Prison staff asked the inmate if he knew why he had been attacked.
“Probably because he found out about my crime,” McCurley said. He tried to cut off my head.

McCurley had been charged with various offences, including pimping a child under the age of 14 for illegal sexual activities.
The court heard that McNamara had told a prison guard that he was responsible for the attack.
“I was talking about his crimes in the yard, about the children, I was abused as a child, and I will not stand for it,” he said.
He admitted that he intended to kill McCurley and would do it again when he was taken to the Maroubra police station.
McNamara will be sentenced in the NSW District Court next year.
