A grandfather has died in a horrific industrial accident involving a conveyor belt at a demolition site.
The outside contractor, 65, was on Wednesday afternoon at the industrial site on Kooragang Island near Newcastle Harbour, north of Sydney, when a large pile struck him during demolition work.
The man was seriously injured and died on the spot, despite the desperate efforts of aid workers and witnesses.
The tragedy happened on a logistics company Qube hired from Newcastle Port.

“We are deeply saddened to confirm the death of an outside demolition contractor working at a Qube Port facility in Newcastle,” a spokesman said.
“Our thoughts are with the person’s family, friends and colleagues and we offer all possible support during this difficult time.”
Devastated relatives who rushed to the site told NBN News that the man was a much-loved father and grandfather.
Police officers spent Wednesday evening investigating the scene as an investigation into the incident was launched.

NSW Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
SafeWork NSW has launched a separate investigation into the fatal accident.
“No further information is available at this time,” a spokeswoman said.
The man’s death has sparked a flood of tributes.
“It’s a terrible accident that took my brother. He is very much loved and will be forever missed,” a heartbroken family member wrote.
