- John Kapiris sparks outrage in new video
- Used derogatory homosexual term to describe Matildas
- Insists that he is not gay and that he made the video for fun
A controversial greengrocer is back in the news after he used a derogatory term to describe our Australian women’s football team.
St Bernards Fruit and Veg Market owner John Kapiris of Adelaide has posted a series of videos in recent weeks showing his support for the Matildas competing in the FIFA Women’s World Cup on home soil.
He went one step too far on Tuesday in a bizarre four-minute video ahead of Australia’s World Cup semi-final clash with England.
While brandishing a sword, he described the Matildas as “carpet eaters,” a derogatory term for gay women.
‘I want to be part of it. God bless you girls, you are doing great,” says Mr. Kapiris towards the end of the video.

“I don’t care if they chew the carpet… I don’t care. I don’t give a fuck!
He doubled down after his wife Leannda expressed disapproval of his comments during filming.
“I’m going to kill you,” she tells him.
Her husband answered and said, ‘No, Leannda doesn’t care. I don’t care if they chew the carpet.’
“That’s lucky for them, man, if they want too much on the carpet and kick the goals, I don’t give a shit.”
Good luck to you girls. Good luck to you anyway. I’m not being disrespectful at all, they are carpet eaters.’
The video divided the internet with more than 17,000 views.

Mr Kapiris stands by his comments, telling the Adelaide Advertiser that the video was intended to be ‘a bit of fun’.
“I’m certainly not homophobic,” he said.
“I barracked 100 percent for them (the Matildas) … I made them a pizza.”
Mr. Kapiris continued doubling down, saying, “I still believe we should roll out the red ‘RAPEST’ for them.”
The Matildas take on Sweden in a bronze medal play-off on Saturday night after their 3-1 semi-final loss to England.
The Matildas were named the happiest team at the Women’s World Cup this week by Pink Magazine, along with Brazil.
The UK news claimed the Matildas had nine first-team players and three reserve players who were in a same-sex relationship, tying the side with the Brazil squad for the most openly lesbian players in the 2023 World Cup.
