Controversial basketballer Liz Cambage learns her fate after two shocking acts of violence during game in China

  • She was ejected from a basketball game
  • Former Opal is a controversial figure

Liz Cambage has escaped serious punishment for her antics that saw her ejected from a basketball match in China.

The former WNBA and Australian Opal player was subsequently removed during which he viciously elbowed an opponent in the head and punched another opponent in the face.

She saw her career on the rocks after she allegedly made racist comments against the Nigerian national team during a warm-up match for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

Opals teammates and members of the Nigerian team alleged Cambage called her opponents “monkeys” and told them to “go back to your third world country” during a stoppage in play.

That sidelined her against her Nigerian-American Los Angeles Sparks teammates and she was eventually released by the franchise.

Her comments also divided the Opals camp and she has since been blacklisted from never representing her country again.

However, Cambage landed solidly on his feet and earned a $1 million contract with the Sichuan Yuanda women’s team in Chengdu – for just three months’ work.

Her huge payday means Cambage earns more than four times as much as the highest-paid WNBA stars, with Supermax contracts of up to $234,936 per season.

However, that money has done little to dampen the center’s behavior after she was expelled this weekend over a pair of ugly incidents.

In the first inning, Cambage lashed out and hit an opponent on the side of the head from behind while defending.

Luckily she was still on the field, she then threw a nasty elbow into an opponent’s head during a foul.

That led to her elimination from the competition, but Cambage was far from done.

After refusing to leave the court while trying to get officials to watch the incident on video, she charged at an official in a threatening manner and shouted in his face, before taunting the crowd and bowing.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Cambage has received a $1,075 fine as well as a warning from the Chinese Basketball Authority.

Precedent suggests she would have been banned from any other league in the world for her behavior.

Basketball fans were quick to bash the Australian star for her actions, calling her a ‘clown’ and saying ‘a leopard doesn’t change its spots’.

With the Opals gearing up for a tough campaign at the Paris Olympics, several online commentators said they were glad Cambage would not be part of the tournament.

“I’m a proud Australian but Liz is an embarrassment not only to most Australians but to all those ‘honest’ players and spectators who follow sport around the world,” one follower wrote.

β€œLiz has some issues she needs to sort out,” wrote another.

‘What a waste of talent. Could have gone down in history as one of the greatest of all time if she wasn’t such a magnet for drama. So glad they got her out of the Opals. Her behavior is downright embarrassing,” another added.

Cambage’s side lost the match 96-85 as Inner Mongolia leveled the series 1-1.
