Conor McGregor’s boxing coach Phil Sutcliffe believes things would be different if a rematch with Floyd Mayweather ever took place.

McGregor and Mayweather went head-to-head in a highly anticipated 2017 match, with Mayweather beating the Irishman via a 10th round TKO.

Yet McGregor has since admitted that his only regret from the fight was not having Sutcliffe in his corner, sticking with his MMA coaching lineup of John Kavanagh and Owen Roddy at the time.

Sutcliffe is now back as part of his team and would be included in the 35-year-old’s company if a rematch between McGregor and Mayweather ever takes place.

It remains to be seen if a rematch will take place, but in an interview with talkSPORTSutcliffe insisted that if the two fighters met again, he believes there would be a different outcome.

“He’s a little older Mayweather and Conor is a little wiser,” Sutcliffe said.

“According to the stats from the first fight, he hit Mayweather more than any other fighter in history.

“I’ve seen the fight six or seven times… all you need is good balance, good footwork and good reading, but with Mayweather it’s a little different, you should give him a little more pressure.

“And I know things, but I’m not going to say them here, but of course it would be different.”

Mayweather could be tempted by the big reward that a rematch with McGregor would bring

Mayweather’s 2017 victory was the last of the American’s 50-match unbeaten career, but the prospect of another big payday could deter him from stepping back into the ring with the Notorious.

When asked what he would add to the approach if McGregor were given a second chance at the former multiple world champion, Sutcliffe outlined his credentials.

Adding: ‘If someone throws something, I can see what to do, I’m good at that.

“I’ve always been good at that, but as I get older I’m getting better at it because I’ve gained a better understanding of it as I’ve seen different things.”
