  • The Australian responded by challenging McGregor to a fight at UFC’s marquee event

Conor McGregor could be heading for a big-money showdown with Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 300 after the pair waged war against each other on social media.

During this weekend’s UFC 293 event, McGregor sent out his usual barrage of opinions via social media, and in one post he took aim at the current featherweight champion.

‘Ask my b****x that little sausage Volkonovski is definitely not p4p 1. Stupid.’ McGregor raced towards the Australian.

‘That means working quickly for me. 100% accuracy work. Readable. Hitable. Painful. I like that he has this title, but we have to fight at some point so that the FW goats are all facing each other and there is no more debate.”

It didn’t take long for Volkanovski to respond. Twenty minutes after the post was sent, he responded by accepting the Irishman’s challenge and pitched UFC 300 as a possible setting for his fight. Simply say, “Let’s do it at #UFC300.”

Volkanovski is coming off a win over Yair Rodriguez at UFC 290 and is currently in the prime of his career, while UFC is still waiting for McGregor’s return to the Octagon.

The ‘Notorious’ fighter, now 34, has not competed in a UFC fight since his brutal leg injury against Dustin Poirier in 2021.

He confirmed his plan to fight again earlier this month, laying out a three-fight plan by focusing on fights against Michael Chandler, Justin Gaethje and a trilogy of encounters with Nate Diaz.

However, it appears a new addition will have to be made to that list if a fight can be confirmed between McGregor and Volkanovski for UFC 300, which will likely take place next spring.

The only question would be whether former multi-time UFC champion McGregor could bring himself to compete at featherweight, or if the fight would be fought in the lightweight division instead.
