“Gallagher showed up with a lot of energy,” Simeone said.

“That’s what we get from him. He needs some time to get used to opponents and his teammates.

With his enthusiasm and passion we have to help him, so that there is a positive adrenaline rush in the team.’

The midfielder has been training independently at Chelsea after being banished to the first team prior to the transfer.

Gallagher had agreed personal terms with the Spanish club weeks ago, but the deal was thrown into limbo after Chelsea withdrew interest in Samu Omorodion, who later left for Porto.

Gallagher, who captained Chelsea on multiple occasions last season, insisted his “dreams have come true” at the club despite being forced out by the Blues this summer.

“To everyone at Chelsea, thank you for making my dreams come true,” Gallagher said last week. “It has been an absolute honour every time I have pulled on the shirt and it has been a dream come true to captain the team on many occasions. I have enjoyed every moment.

“These memories will last forever. I appreciate all the love and support from the fans. Hearing my name chanted on the bridge is a special feeling, and the banner you displayed meant the world to me.

‘Thank you for everything. I wish the club all the best for the future and hope to see you all at Stamford Bridge soon!’
