Connie Chiume dead at 72: Black Panther actress passes away after being ‘admitted for medical procedure’ – four years after death of leading man Chadwick Boseman

Black Panther actress Connie Chiume has died at the age of 72.

The South African actress died Tuesday at Garden City Hospital in Johannesburg, according to a family statement posted on the star’s Instagram account on Wednesday.

It began: ‘The Chiume family regrets to inform you of the passing of internationally acclaimed and award-winning actress Connie Chiume.

“Connie Chiume passed away today, August 6, 2024, at Garden City Hospital. The family requests privacy during this difficult time. The family will communicate further details.”

Although few details have been reported about her death, her son Nongelo Chiume revealed to the South African news network New space Africa that she had been ‘admitted for a medical procedure’ before her death.

The South African actress died on Tuesday at Garden City Hospital in Johannesburg, according to a statement from the family posted on the star’s Instagram on Wednesday.

Nongelo explains: ‘She recovered well, but unfortunately we received the news today that she passed away.’

He added that he and the rest of his family “cannot confirm any details” about his mother’s death.

However, Nongelo said the family “will continue to remain updated with any updates they wish to share with the general public.”

Connie’s son was also asked on the show how he would like his mother to be remembered.

Nongelo responded, “We want her to be remembered as a person who gave her talents completely. We want her to be remembered as someone who was selfless and someone who always wanted the next person to do well and believed in their God-given talents.”

In addition, the South African government posted a tribute to Connie on X (formally Twitter).

They wrote: ‘Our sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the multi-award winning and legendary actress Connie Chiume. Her outstanding work will always be remembered #RIPConnieChiume.’

Connie rose to fame for her role in the 2018 MCU blockbuster Black Panther, in which she played the role of tribal chief Zawavari.

Between those two films, lead actor Chadwick Boseman died of colon cancer in August 2020 at the age of 43.

He kept his battle with the disease a secret from his fellow actors in the series Black Panther.

In addition to the Marvel films, Connie has more than 30 roles to her name, including a leading role in the TV series Housekeepers with 18 episodes from 2018 to 2022.

She also starred in Beyoncé’s 2020 musical film Black Is King, which served as the visual companion to the live-action remake of The Lion King, in which she played the role of Simba’s mother Sarabi.
