Coney Island’s iconic Cyclone roller coaster reopens 2 weeks after mid-ride malfunction

NEW YORK — The famous Cyclone roller coaster at Coney Island in New York City has reopened two weeks after its launch. a mechanical problem The attraction had to be stopped halfway through and people had to be helped off the attraction.

The 97 year old wooden roller coaster at Moon Park was put back into service on Saturday after city inspectors gave their approval following the repairs.

The Cyclone was shut down indefinitely on Aug. 22 due to a damaged sprocket in the engine compartment. The driver stopped the ride and several people were transported without injury, the city’s Buildings Department said. The department issued citations to Luna Park for violations related to the damaged equipment and failure to immediately notify the city.

According to city inspectors, the ride was approved Saturday morning after several days of test runs.

“This American icon has captivated guests for nearly a century, and our dedicated team and ride technicians continue to ensure this legendary 97-year-old landmark continues to operate safely and smoothly,” said Alessandro Zamperla, president and CEO of the theme park’s owner, Central Amusement International, in a statement.
