Competitor at CrossFit Games in Texas dies during swimming event

A CrossFit Games competitor died Thursday morning during a swimming competition in a Texas lake.

CrossFit CEO Don Faul said during a press conference that the organization was “deeply saddened” by the death of one of its athletes, and that they were cooperating with authorities into the death.

A Fort Worth Fire Department official said they were called to assist police around 8 a.m. because there was “a participant in the water who had not been seen in some time.”

He said the fire department was not on the scene when the first call was made. The athlete’s body was found about an hour later. Faul said CrossFit had security personnel on site at the event.

Faul said the CrossFit community is like a family. “We are doing everything we can to support the family and our community during this tragic time,” Faul said.

CBS News Texas reported that the local coroner’s office named the deceased athlete as 28-year-old Lazar Dukic from Serbia.
