Community alum Yvette Nicole Brown suggests harsh criticism of LA Mayor Karen Bass amid fires is race related

Comedians and Act Your Age colleagues Yvette Nicole Brown and Kym Whitley are standing by Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass amid the wildfire crisis, and they believe the harsh criticism she’s receiving is race-related.

“Let me tell you something, she has a spine of steel,” Yvette said TMZ on Saturday at a supermarket.

“And she’s also been a black woman in America for a long time, so none of this is new to her. We’re angry because we’re tired of it.’

Kym added: “We are angry with her. Someone needs to stand behind her and support her, because of the way she is dealing with it. You can see it in her face. She stays calm, but think about it, she has the city to take care of!’

The 53-year-old Community alumnus noted that the 71-year-old Democratic politician was born and raised in the City of Angels, but she is “not the mayor of every municipality” as Mayor Doug Stewart oversees Malibu.

The 62-year-old Two Funny Mamas podcaster understands that people watching the fires on TV want someone to blame, but stressed that Karen helped bring in firefighters “who come from other countries to help us.”

‘This is not the time [to blame]. I want everyone to stay calm, be vigilant and support the leadership,” Whitley said.

“Support Karen Bass. That’s all I can say. Ooh, you all upset me. She did what she had to do. She jumped in.”

The Daytime Emmy nominee was ordered to evacuate her Tarzana home last Thursday — the same day she tried to celebrate her adopted son Joshua Whitney’s 14th birthday.

Brown explained that in the 30 years she has lived in LA, there has been a fire every year and that she cannot recall anyone in the past placing the blame on one person.

“I’ve never seen everyone react like that to the mayor and blame one person for a natural disaster,” scoffed the newlyweds — who just tied the knot to Anthony R. Davis on Dec. 14.

‘I’ve never seen it. What’s different this time? Interesting, huh?’

Bass attended President John Mahama’s inauguration in Ghana on Tuesday, when heavy Santa Ana winds sparked wildfires, and she was widely criticized for cutting $17.6 million from the LAFD’s annual budget.

Celebrities who have spoken out against the former congressman include James Woods, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Sara Foster and Khloé Kardashian, who called Bass “a joke” on Friday.

“There were no cuts that were made that would have impacted the situation we have been dealing with in recent days,” Karen told reporters last Thursday.
