The Commonwealth Games are facing another major setback as Canada now withdraws its bid to host the 2030 Games, leaving the event in turmoil.
Last month, the Games suffered a devastating blow when Victoria unexpectedly dropped out as host for the 2026 event.
Prime Minister Daniel Andrews claimed that the initial $2.6 billion price tag for the event had risen to between $6 billion and $7 billion.
Canada’s province of Alberta considered bidding for the 2030 Games, with the sporting event to be held in Calgary and Edmonton.
But Commonwealth Sport Canada (CSC) has since issued a statement saying there will no longer be a bid – placing the blame on Victoria.
“Commonwealth Sport Canada has been informed by the Government of Alberta that they have decided to halt exploration of a 2030 Commonwealth Games bid,” the CSC said.
“We believe the Victorian Government’s recent decision to withdraw from the 2026 Commonwealth Games was a key factor in Alberta’s decision, as was an overreliance on taxpayer support for the planning and implementation of the To play.
“Commonwealth Sport Canada is deeply disappointed with the Alberta Government’s decision, but respects their right to make this decision.”
The Alberta government had pledged up to $2 million and $1 million from Edmonton for the Games.
Alberta’s Minister of Tourism and Sports, Joseph Schow, said current estimates say the 2030 Games would cost $2.68 billion.
“We are committed to remaining transparent to Albertans about the costs of hosting international sporting events and clearly demonstrating that our investment provides a return for the people and communities of Alberta,” he said.
“That is why we have taken the decision not to proceed with the bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games.”
