Gilbert said: ‘I feel happy, positive and optimistic. I feel good and I feel that I am recovering day by day.

“Some days I’m well enough to do some writing and I have a feeling that when I’m over all this, it’s going to be a show.”

The comedian and TV presenter was on a charity fundraising walk when he began to feel unwell and noticed lumps appearing on his body.

He ended up being treated at Velindre in Cardiff, the cancer hospital for which he was raising money.

In an interview on BBC Radio Wales, he said; ‘I hope 2023 is a better year and I can start having fun again,

‘The things people say when they find out you have cancer: people panic. There is a lot of humor in it.

Difficult news: Comedian Rhod Gilbert announced that he has cancer in a statement posted on social media in July of this year.

The Welsh star revealed that he is being treated by the same Cardiff-based cancer center that he is a patron of and praised the NHS for their incredible service.

Rhod, whose television work includes a hosting role on Never Mind The Buzzcocks, would not reveal the type of cancer he had been diagnosed with but said he is in the “best possible hands”.

Addressing Facebook followers, he wrote: “As a proud patron of the Velindre Cancer Centre, I have traveled the world, hosting mayhem quizzes and star-studded comedy nights.” I have met and befriended so many inspiring employees, patients, and their families. It has been a big part of my life for the last ten years.

“So while I never imagined I would be a patient here, I know better than anyone that I am in the best possible hands.

‘The NHS care I’m getting is incredible. I wouldn’t wish this on anyone… but who knows, maybe I’ll come out on the other side with a new stand-up show and 40 minute rant about the orange pumpkin.

‘Thank you all for your support over the last few weeks and months (and years). I will disappear for a while and not comment further, at least not for now, while I focus on my recovery.

Update: In August, Rhod Gilbert’s wife, Sian Harries, revealed that the couple have moved house three times since July to be closer to a hospital.

After previously canceling shows due to problems with his throat, he halted his Book of John book tour shortly before the diagnosis was announced in July.

Posting to Facebook on July 8, he wrote: ‘As many of you may know, I have been battling pain in my neck and throat for the past few months. I have been receiving treatment and have continued to tour whenever possible.

‘I sincerely hoped to go ahead with all the scheduled dates, but I’m afraid that’s not going to be possible. I’m having surgery next week and I’ll hang my boots up for a while while I recover.’
