Despite a season in which the Crew finished with just eight losses – the second fewest in the league – Columbus’ leading 16 draws meant they narrowly missed the MLS Cup Playoffs by two points.

As a way of securing change for the future, management made the decision to fire manager Caleb Porter just a day after their loss to Orlando City ensured their demise.

Porter posted a record 45-43-37 during his time in the Ohio capital, winning the 2020 MLS Cup and the following season’s Campeones Cup against Mexican Campeon de Campeones winners Cruz Azul.

“This is not a decision we have taken lightly and I must first and foremost thank Caleb for his tireless commitment to the Crew during his four seasons with the Club,” Crew Director Tim Bezbatchenko said in a press release.

“Caleb will forever be part of Black & Gold’s history as the second star above our 2020 peak is a testament to his contributions and what we were able to bring home in an extraordinary year.”

The team’s three assistant coaches – Pablo Moreira, Tim Hanley and Eric Quill will not return to the Crew next season.

A draw would have been enough to save the Crew and keep their playoff hopes alive. A 38′ goal by Derrick Etienne gave Columbus the lead at half time. Even a goal from Junior Urso in the 56’s kept the Crew in the playoffs.

However, a handball into the penalty area on the 81st minute by Crew’s Milos Degenek was confirmed as a penalty by VAR and Orlando’s Facundo Torres scored to make it 2-1 in Orlando City. Columbus was unable to find an answer and the Crew failed to qualify for the playoffs for the third time in four years.
