Indianapolis’ newly acquired free agent Gardner Minshew had praise for the organization’s fourth overall pick, quarterback Anthony Richardson.

The Colts toppled their quarterback room this offseason – moving on from Matt Ryan and Nick Foles and buying Minshew and Richardson.

While training camp should give signs of who could win the runway, Minshew has already seen impressive signs of the University of Florida product.

Minshew and Richardson both trained at the same facility in the Sunshine State prior to the draft—and before Minshew even knew he was going to the Colts—and were blown away by what he saw of the young gun.

‘The first is, of course, how impressively the ball just jumps out of his hand. Physically, he’s got everything you want, so from that standpoint, it’s just when you see him as, “Wow, this guy really has a shot,” said Minshew.

“And then go around him and see how he works, how he accepts criticism and wants to learn and get better, all of those things are really encouraging to be around.”

With the two now teammates, Minshew’s impressions of Richardson have only improved.

“I’m really impressed because often the bigger guys with the bigger arms aren’t as fast with some of the RPO stuff and the underlying passes,” said Minshew. “He’s very fast and his feet are very fast, and I think he can grab the ball and handle it quickly.”

Minshew, Richardson and third year QB Sam Ehlinger will likely spend training camp fighting for roster spots and trying to establish a hierarchy on the depth chart.

But Minshew, the fifth-year veteran from Washington State, says he will focus on working with the two younger QBs rather than entering into a rivalry with them.

“Having a room that’s splintered or rooting together isn’t fun for anyone, and it really pulls the team apart,” Minshew said.

“So I think more than anything, you compete and you compete to make each other better. You push each other, but whoever is there, whoever it is, in the end we all want to win and we want to help them all win.”

Minshew continued, saying that as a veteran, “Part of my role is to put them at ease. You want to help the room as much as possible, everyone in it. So we have two younger boys, him and Sam, so I just try to help them out where I can.”
