Collingwood AFL star Nick Daicos reveals advice from legendary dad Peter before Anzac Day clash

Nick Daicos has revealed the words of wisdom he received from his famous father ahead of his stunning performance in Collingwood’s Anzac Day blockbuster against Essendon on Tuesday.

Trailing by 28 points in three-quarter time, the Magpies stormed home 7.2 to 0.3 in the final term to steal a classic, 13.12 (90) to 11.11 (77).

And that was largely helped by Daicos’ contributions. He ended up with 40 possessions, but it was his two crucial goals in the last quarter that really earned him his first Anzac medal.

The 20-year-old, who is only in his sophomore season, has been prolific in almost every game he has played this year to be comfortably favorite for the Brownlow medal.

After the game, Daicos revealed the conversation he had during the week with his father – Collingwood Team of the Century member and premiership player Peter.

“Daddy even grabbed me for a chat during the week, which was really nice,” Daicos said.

“He said: ‘As long as you’re satisfying yourself and the club, those are the only two things you should focus on.’ That meant a lot to me and I am very grateful to him for that.

“I always talk to Dad about my footy and he talks to me and gives his opinion. I stand before you today with this award because of him. He taught me so much.

“He checks in on me regularly — and during the week was one of those occasions. Sometimes he notices I’m a little moody, so Dad knows me better than anyone and will check on me, which I appreciate more than I can put into words.”

When asked about his son’s amazing career so far, Peter Daicos insists that Nick has started ‘much better’.

“Sure, they were different eras, but his (first 31 games) were better…much better,” said Peter Daicos. The Australian after the match.

“I’m proud of both guys (Nick and Josh, who had 30 divestments). To play like they did on a day like today (Anzac Day), and the way they did at the end is so good.’

Nick Daicos, who won the Rising Star award last year, says he surprised even himself with his meteoric rise to the top level.

“I think I surprised myself that last year my goal was to play just one game. I made my debut early and was able to stay in the flank, which was great,” he said.

“This year I’m getting a lot more confidence to get around the ball and play a bit more in midfield.

“I think so many players have just moved to another level this year, so hopefully we will be in good stead later in the year. It’s exciting to see guys blooming around me too.’

Coach Craig McRae is also impressed with the youngster’s instrumental contributions to the team, telling the press after the game about how hard he works behind the scenes.

“I’ve always been a Nick fan,” McRae said.

“He’s been huge for us. He works so hard and behind the scenes he just goes back to work. He’s the first to watch video tapes with his coaches, he’s the first to get on the vaulting floor and do hands, he’s doing extras in his game – he’s always wanting to get better.

“He’s being rewarded now and I’m sure it won’t be the only time.”
