College football fans all say the same thing after awkward ESPN interview from Notre Dame’s Sugar Bowl win
Molly McGrath wouldn’t let go of the microphone when ESPN’s sideline reporter for the Sugar Bowl and college football fans on social media also took notice in what ended up being an awkward post-game interview.
McGrath asked her first question, as Sugar Bowl President Walter Becker asked her if she wanted to hold the microphone.
When she confirmed, which is the norm in broadcasting, Becker decided to accept it and not let go.
When McGrath tried to ask her next question to Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman, Becker interrupted, wanting to hand over the trophy, which McGrath obliged.
McGrath couldn’t resist taking a moment to stand on stage in the middle of the Caesars Superdome and laugh at herself about how her postgame interview derailed Becker and Freeman.
The veteran reporter was prepared for anything and college football fans noticed how the interview was conducted.

The interview derailed a bit when Becker took over from McGrath after her question
“My guess…it was supposed to be a question for Freeman and then Troy Hawkes of @Allstate to present the trophy. This guy took that away from his title sponsor,” one fan said of Becker.

‘Because he talks like those sloths on Zootopia. She thought he was done.”
‘Never give up the microphone!’

A section of college football fans also noticed that Becker shares a name with band co-founder Steely Dan, with some saying he resembles the late yacht rock legend.
Notre Dame upset Georgia to advance to the College Football Playoff semifinals against Penn State.
McGrath may be tasked with that again, as the Orange Bowl will likely have a similar trophy presentation next week.
