Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson ‘test positive for COVID’ and will miss Critics’ Choice Awards

The Banshees of Inisherin stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson will miss the Critics’ Choice Awards after testing positive for COVID-19.

The news was announced by Variety’s senior editor for culture and events, Marc Malkin, in a cheep posted Saturday night but did not cite a particular source.

Colin, 46, is up for the Best Actor gong for his performance in The Banshees of Inisherin, while Brendan, 67, will be up for the Best Supporting Actor category.

‘Here we go again. Just confirmed #colinfarrell and #brendongleeson will not be at the #CriticsChoiceAwards tomorrow because they both tested positive for COVID,” Malkin’s Twitter message read.

Just days earlier, Jamie Lee Curtis, 64, a Best Supporting Actress nominee for Everything Everywhere All at Once, revealed she would be skipping the ceremony after contracting the virus.

Colin, Brendan and Jamie Lee were on hand at Tuesday’s Golden Globe Awards, where Colin took home the award for Best Actor – Motion Picture – Musical/Comedy. for his acclaimed role in The Banshees of Inisherin.

Farrell stars as an Irish drinking buddy in the dark tragicomedy, which centers on two lifelong friends who find themselves at a dead end when Brendan Gleeson’s character, a brooding folk musician, abruptly ends their relationship.

The Banshees of Inisherin is nominated in a number of categories at the Critics’ Choice Awards, racking up a total of nine nominations.

The film is a top contender in the Best Picture race and Colin remains a favorite in the Best Actor category.

Barry Keoghan is nominated alongside Brendan in the Best Supporting Actor category, while Kerry Condon is in the running for Best Supporting Actress.

The film’s writer-director Martin McDonagh is nominated for Best Screenplay and Best Director, while its entire cast earned a Best Acting Cast nomination.

But the film and its stars face stiff competition from other critical favorites like Tár, Elvis, The Whale, The Fabelmans and Everything Everywhere All at Once.

In his Golden Globes acceptance speech, Colin spoke about the overwhelming critical acclaim that has been hailed by the film, which sees him reuniting with his In Bruges co-star Brendan Gleeson.

Colin said, “To work on this film, I never expect films to work or find an audience and when they do, it’s shocking to me.” I am horrified by what has happened in the last few months, in an exciting way.

The Banshees of Inisherin also garnered Best Motion Picture – Musical/Comedy and Best Screenplay for writer-director Martin McDonagh, whom Farrell praised in his speech.

‘Martin Mcdonagh,’ he said, ‘I owe you a lot, man.’

Colin continued to shower Gleeson with love, saying: ‘Brendan, I love you so much. I love you a lot.’
